Greenland
A 2,175,600-square-km. island in the North Atlantic Ocean, a dependency of Denmark. Greenland’s ice cap covers 1.8 million square km. and is the second largest ice sheet in the world. On the west coast, from Disko Bay northward, the sea is covered by ice during the winter months but in the summer is navigable. More than two-thirds of the estimated population of 57,000 live on the west coast in the Disko Bay area; 14,000 people live in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. The first people, the palaeo-Eskimos, arrived in Greenland around 2500 B.C. The Saqqaq and Dorset cultures appeared followed by the Thule culture and the Norse community.
